
We see learning as a uniquely personal and emergent event, whose full dimensions are often overlooked in modern education, partly because our language lacks the terms to register them. In the early twentieth century, the educator, mathematician, and process philosopher Alfred North Whitehead attempted to remedy this gap in our vocabulary with the terms creativity, prehension, concrescence, and actual occasion.
Creativity: The principle that every moment of experience contains the possibility of something genuinely new emerging.
Prehension: The process through which experiences, relationships, and possibilities are integrated into an emerging moment of experience.
Concrescence: The process by which these many prehensions grow together into a unified moment of experience.
Actual Occasion: A completed moment of experience—the unique outcome of this process of becoming.
Metrics-driven education relies on abstraction, which risks leaving out what matters most: the unique concrescence through which prehensions—felt interrelations and value-feelings—come together to form moments of lived understanding..
Whitehead pictured learning as a natural three-beat rhythm:
1. Romance – First contact with something exciting or interesting, in its raw wholeness. Curiosity and wonder, before any careful analysis.
2. Precision – The disciplined stage. You learn exact facts, rules, and techniques — the careful, sometimes tedious detail work.
3. Generalization – The payoff. You put those precise skills to use, applying and connecting them, returning to a richer, more capable version of that original wholeness.
His main warning: educators often jump straight to Precision (drilling facts) before sparking any Romance, which produces what he called “inert ideas.” Wonder should come first, discipline second, application third — though in fact the three are never separate, and what sustains learning continues to be wonder or romance, attending to the living connections underneath the details, and engaging in open dialogue.
Tech companies paradoxically promise to make learning more “personalized” through AI tools, which isolate learners and trap attention using engagement looping and persuasive design. Studies link their overuse to cognitive atrophy and diminished neuroplasticity, with measurable effects on memory, critical thinking, and creativity.
